“Just because you’re a journalist you are not exempted from assassination if you’re a son of a bitch,” Philippine President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s said during a press conference, justifying the killing of journalists. He claimed that many killed journalists were either corrupt or had “done something” that warranted their murders, according to press accounts. He also warned that journalists who defamed others in their news reporting would not necessarily be protected under the law from violent reprisals.
Duterte made the remarks in response to a reporter’s question on Tuesday about how his government would handle cases of media murders, according to news reports.

Radio journalist shot dead in the Philippines
A gunman shot Maurito Lim once in the head at around 11 a.m. after the journalist arrived for his regular “Chairman Mao On Board” news program at dyRD radio station in Bohol province’s Tagbilaran City, according to news reports. The assailant fled the scene on a motorcycle, the reports said.

The commotion began after Bob Dietz, Asia program coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), asked Aquino about media killings in the Philippines, and what the international community can do to help address the problem as well as impunity.

Radio journalist killed in the Philippines
Bangkok, June 10, 2014–The Committee to Protect Journalists today called on Filipino authorities to determine the motive in the murder on Monday of radio journalist Nilo Baculo Sr. and bring the assailants swiftly to justice.
Baculo was shot twice in the chest around noon on Monday by two assailants on a motorcycle in Mindoro Oriental province’s Calapan City, according to news reports. The assailants fled on the motorcycle, the reports said.
