Putin should reverse steps to restrict independent press

New York, March 20, 2014–In a crackdown unprecedented since the dismantling of the Soviet Union, Russian authorities have moved in recent months to cleanse the media landscape of independent voices. The Committee to Protect Journalists writes to Russian President Vladimir Putin today to express its concerns in detail, and urge the president to reverse the anti-press actions. A free flow of information is vital to conflict resolution; censorship, filtering, and restricting independent media contribute to the deepening of crises and the closing of societies to the world, CPJ writes.
